A Project Closest To Our Hearts: Haiti
Nearly 60% of Haitians live below the poverty line, with many surviving on less than $2.15 per day.
Haiti has the lowest doctor-to-patient ratio in the Western Hemisphere—about one doctor per 3,000 people

ORSI was founded after seeing the disastrous conditions in Haiti
Since 2010, ORSI has stood by Haiti’s medical community, providing surgical teams, equipment, and education. Though it’s too dangerous to send teams now, we’ve already sent tons of critical equipment and will continue supplying more, including fracture fixation sets to help save limbs. Haiti suffers from both natural and unnatural disasters, and we have been more boots-on-the-ground with this project than any other.
The Grand Rounds series, moderated from Haiti, has become the world’s largest orthopedic knowledge exchange, and has involved hundreds of medical professionals and created a beautiful partnership with the orthopedic specialists in Haiti. While we can’t be there in person, our commitment hasn’t wavered—we will keep supporting Haiti’s orthopedic care and look forward to the day we can return to the operating room.

The Challenges We Face
ORSI has tens of thousands of dollars worth of critical medical equipment trapped in Haitian customs, including a state-of-the-art C-arm X-ray machine that could be saving lives right now. For years, this essential equipment has sat unused while hospitals struggle without the tools they need. Bureaucracy and red tape are standing in the way of urgent care, and we are fighting to break through—building connections, finding resources, and doing whatever it takes to get this equipment out of customs and into operating rooms where it belongs.
